Laptop Cooler

A laptop cooler, also called a chill mat, is an attachment that helps to reduce the increasing heat on the bottom of the device. The fan that is embedded in the laptop is really not able to cool the laptop appropriately. A cooling pad has several fans inside of it and it can be placed right below the laptop. There are many laptop coolers that use a power adapter as a power source. However, the most up to date versions of a chill pad use the USP port on the laptop. Also, the more advanced chill pad's offer an insert for memory sticks or key drives.

The chill mat's that are powered to the computer are made to draw heat from the bottom of the computer. Other coolers are designed to blow cool air towards the laptop using fans. The speed of the fans can be adjusted manually or automatically depending on the model. Chill pads that hook into the computer are always not the best appliance. The fact that the pad has to plug into the the computer, means that the computer will have to carry an additional load of power. Many laptops today only supply a 2.5 watt of power in the USB port.

There were many studies conducted at the California Polytechnic University in regards to the heat resource on a laptop computer. The results showed that chill pads that required a hook up reduced the life of the laptop. However, if the laptop was lifted from the bottom so that it was at an angle, the heat was able free flow away from the laptop. This was the only proven method of cooling that was successful long term. There are many coolers on the market that are built in such a way that the laptop is lifted from the top. It also allows the user to have a better access at the keys without their wrists being damaged.

The newest cooler on the market that utilizes the angle mechanism is the Targus CoolPad. The CoolPad helps prevent the user from being burned and prevents the laptop from overheating at the same time. The top portion of the laptop is lifted at an angle so that the air is able to flow freely. The pad also has a feature that allows the user to turn the device in a complete 360 degree turn to show another person the computer screen.

Many students are finding the pad useful due to the lightweight feel of the device. There are several copy cat versions of the CoolPad on the market as well, but they do not have the turning mechanism. They may be a little cheaper in price but the quality is not very great. The CoolPad may be more than one might want to spend but the outcome of the product and the quality will last.

Use Bluetooth For A Personal Area Network

The latest technology of Bluetooth has allowed brought about a fair amount of revolution in the way devices communicate with each other. It is a technology that has been in use since 1999 but now is being put to widespread use. This amazing piece of technology allows the user to connect the PDA, mobile phone, MP3 player and just about any digital device, that supports the function, to communicate with each other. This concept of having all your devices Bluetooth enabled so that they can exchange information is being called PAN or Personal Area Network.

Like the 802.11 wireless technology, Bluetooth also uses radio signals to create bandwidth but it does not require a receiver to be plugged in the USB port of the computer. The range of Bluetooth is much better than this erstwhile technology and is allowing people to go further into a world devoid of entangled wires.

Developed and designed to be a low cost, secure and easy to use technology, Bluetooth is available in two classes: class 1 and class 2. Class 1 is relatively uncommon one and can detect other Bluetooth devices in the range of 100 meters. Class 2 is the more used and common one and enables access up to a range of 10 meters only.

A Bluetooth enabled computer has a receiver installed inside and can connect simultaneously with a maximum of 7 other devices. Though most of the computers being manufactured today (and definitely all the Apple Macs) have a Bluetooth receiver installed, if your older computer needs does not have one, it can easily be made to accept and send Bluetooth messages. This can be done by using a USB to Bluetooth adaptor or installing it internally. Also if it is a notebook that needs to be Bluetooth enabled and you have a spare PCMCIA slot, you could use a Bluetooth card to get going with Bluetooth.

The ease of use, affordability and instant compatibility one can now download all the data on addresses, contacts, things to do and notes on to the computer in a jiffy. Downloading pictures from digital cameras, saving mp3 audio files from the mp3 player and sending a print command to the printer have now become much easier without the need for long twisted and messy looking cables. It is also being used in areas other than that of computers. Hands free headsets for mobiles phones are today hands free and wire free. Car phones can use the same concept to enable speaking on the phone and driving a seamless affair. The list of devices that Bluetooth can be used with includes cordless phones, faxes, headsets and video.

As always people have discovered new applications for the latest technology. One of such uses is called 'Bluejacking'. In 'Bluejacking' people can send messages from their mobile phones to other mobile phones in the vicinity without accessing the mobile service providers network. The first ever message that was sent using 'Bluejacking' was 'Buy Ericsson'. Though it seems to have limited use it can be a fun thing to do among friends. "Bluecasting' is another such use which has captured the interest of advertisers. In this process, Bluetooth enabled billboards and signposts can be used to send relevant and appropriate messages to all Bluetooth devices in the area. This method of advertising is extremely relevant for location specific businesses like food service restaurants, malls and the like.

3 Home Wireless Network Points

Now a days having a wireless network available to you is more normal than abnormal. Many reasons have led to this change, one being cost. It is very cost effective so set up a wireless network as opposed to a wired network.

Because of the rise in wireless network popularity, more and more computer manufacturers are equipping their systems with the right wireless networking hardware. I am going to discuss 3 big points, wireless networking in laptops, desktops, and also the software on these machines

So we start off with a very important question - Is your laptop or home computer wireless enabled? This is how you can check if your computer has wireless capabilities or not.

Laptops

Many newer laptops have wireless networking capabilities already built in to them. If you laptop came with the hardware built inside of it, then all you need to do is make sure it is enabled and the button on the front (usually) of the laptop is lit up. If a wireless PCMI card is needed in the laptop computer, then make sure it is compatible with your brand of computer first. When you install it, make sure you have the driver disk associated with the hardware, and that it's driver matches what version of Windows you have.

Desktop Computers

If you need to check to see if your desktop computer has a wireless connection, turn off the computer and turn it around and look for a rod sticking out near the bottom of the tower. This would be the wireless antenna just like an antenna would be on a radio. If you see nothing like this then your desktop probably does not have a wireless card installed in the PCI slot. So buy one that matches the version of Windows that you have on the desktop.

Windows to check the Wireless Capacity

Once everything is installed on your laptop or desktop you want to use windows to check the wireless capacity to make sure the settings are correct. Open up the Device Manager in Windows. Look for the network adapters + sign and click it. Look for something under there that should have the term "wireless" attached to it. If you see that there then you know everything has been configured correctly and all you need to do is connect to the available wireless network.

Laptops And Entertainment Are Growing

Mobile, mobile, and mobile. Everything goes mobile nowadays. Demand for hand phones is higher than demand for traditional phones. There is no difference with laptop. Demand for mobile computer (laptop) is now higher than demand for desktop computer. Who have predicted earlier about this trend? If now is still year 1999, maybe no one ever predicted this trend.

Like it or not, we must follow this trend. Everyone needs to follow the latest trend of technology. If not, your life will be "doomed". Through the last few months, even big computer companies have released many thin laptops. This is happening because many people need lighter laptops. With busier lifestyles for everyone, we need instant products. This is crazy but even some people order meals online or by phone and these foods delivered to their home (or office)!

Mobile entertainment is also following this trend. Mobile entertainment can be categorized into several parts. First, online gaming. You can see many gaming laptops with unlimited internet usage from everywhere. Now many people play online games from their laptops even if they are not in their home. You can say this is mobile entertainment, of course.

Other benefits of mobile technology are VOIP and better webcam quality. These days it is very easy to find cheap and good webcam then use this webcam when we chat with our friends everywhere. Of course this is another mobile entertainment because it's enjoyable to chat directly with our friends through webcam (rather than if we are just typing in MSN or Yahoo Messenger). Mobile entertainment will continue to grow just like mobile laptop computer which now is a very popular thing.

7 Good Reasons For Buying A Laptop Online

Laptops are becoming increasingly popular with consumers

mainly because laptops offer excellent portability, convenience

and performance in one small package. You can take your

handy little laptop anywhere; no matter whether you're

just going into the next room or going around the world.

Laptops or notebook computers are the ultimate high tech

gadgets of our time. They offer a tremendous amount of

technology in a small versatile machine: you can surf the

web, you can watch movies or play games, you can create

graphics or do a spreadsheet, you can write your next novel

or write your latest school report, you can listen to music

or connect directly by webcam to all your friends... anywhere,

anytime. These are just a few of the things you can do on your

laptop.

And those are all good solid reasons why you should be

considering buying a laptop if you're in the market for

a personal computer. Now here are some reasons why you

should make that laptop purchase ONLINE.

1. Convenience

Buying your laptop online is very convenient. You can sit in

your living room and order one of these technical marvels

within a few minutes. Granted, visiting your local mall or

tech shop will give you an opportunity to examine your

future purchase first-hand, but for many buyers in distant

or remote locations this is not an option.

Online shopping makes it convenient for everyone to buy

their laptop, no matter where they live. It gives everyone

the same deals and specials that they normally would not

get without the Internet. It is a form of 'Shopping Democracy'

in action.

Forget long drives to a busy mall, high gas prices, crowded stores...

ordering and buying your laptop from the comfort of your living

room or your home office offers great convenience and satisfaction.

2. Better Selection

Shopping online for your notebook offers you a greater

selection. Actually, these days just about any laptop

invented can be bought online. Your selection will be much

greater than you can get in a brick and mortar store.

Most major laptop stores and manufacturers have online outlets

so finding a merchant to suit your requirements will be very

easy to do. Finding and configuring your perfect laptop will

be much simpler if you do it online. You can take your time

and you won't be rushed by impatient customers waiting in the

line behind you or frustrated by a pushy sales clerk in front

of you!

3. Laptop Reviews

Perhaps, one of the best aspects of buying your laptop on

the web, are all the reviews and customer ratings you can

examine before making your final decision. The Internet

is a vast warehouse of reviews and customer ratings on

the products you want to buy. Third party review sites

and online notebook guides are also helpful when you're

looking for general information on purchasing a laptop

or computer.

Many online stores have customer feedback and reviews

which are extremely helpful. Whether positive or negative

these reviews will guide you in making a better purchasing

decision. So you should take full advantage of these online

laptop reviews and sites.

4. Comparison Shopping

Compare before you buy. Another obvious benefit of buying

your laptop online, you can compare all the different prices

and stores before you buy. The Internet makes this much

more convenient than driving around in the real world

to four or five stores just to get the best price.

Online shopping offers you a great chance to do some

serious comparison shopping before you buy. Surf

around and save your money.

5. Best Pricing

Online stores offer very competitive pricing, mainly

because there are no overheads or expenses these stores

have to keep. Everything is automated and computerized

which can mean bigger savings and lower prices for

anyone buying online. It is more like buying from a

warehouse outlet than a retail store. You will

get a lower price.

Keep in mind, any online store will have a huge consumer

base (the whole world in most cases) that their volume

levels may be extremely high so offering lower prices

is within reason and good business.

6. Laptop Coupons

Many major online laptop sellers such as Dell, HP, Toshiba

do offer online coupons and special sales which can mean

tremendous savings or discounts for the average buyer.

In many cases these coupons or deals are only available

online so it really pays to buy your laptop from the web.

7. Free Shipping

Free shipping is also offered by many online retailers

and notebook manufacturers. This is another reason

why buying online can prove beneficial. UPS or next

day shipping is often available, although if you're

having your laptop configured or created to your

own specifications it usually takes longer to receive

your purchase.

So the next time you're thinking about buying a laptop,

consider buying it online. It will not only be more

convenient but you will also have a wider selection, better

pricing, and all the reviews and customer feedback you

will need to make a wise decision. Moreover, it doesn't

matter where you live, you can comparison shop to find

the best deal to suit your needs. Plus, if you check around,

you can get free shipping thrown in as an extra reason

to buy your laptop online.

What Is The Difference Between A Command Boot, Cold Boot And Warm Boot On A PDT6846?

In the world of bar code terminals and data collection it is important to recognize that you may encounter a time where you need to reboot your bar code terminals. Most people don't know what the difference is between a cold boot and a warm boot; and how each affects their data collection equipment. This article is designed to eliminate some of that confusion and hopefully provide you with the necessary information on how to correctly recover your PDT6846 if it encounters an error from which it cannot recover.

A Command Boot on a PDT6846 is used to enter the bar code terminal into its command mode. The command mode is used mainly for testing and downloading programs onto the terminal. Much like going to the command prompt on your computer (run/cmd), various DOS commands can be entered and executed on the PDT6846.

A Cold Boot sometimes referred to as a cold start) is the start-up of the terminal from a powered down or off state. A cold boot resets RAM and reboots the program entered onto the NVM. Because a cold boot resets RAM it is important to recognize that any applicatons or data that has not been written to non-volatile memory will be lost.

A Warm Boot (sometimes referred to as a warm start) is the resetting of the PDT6846 once it has been powered on and has encountered an error that cannot be recovered. A warm boot will reset the PDT6846 but will retain any data that has been stored in the RAM.

Macbook Air Blows the Roof Off Expectations

Apple has already long-ago proven itself far more than a mere one-trick pony (with the Apple IIE, iPod, iPhone, etc.). And now the ubiquitous brand is back in the saddle again!

Taking a break from our usual iPhone discussion, we thought we'd take a moment to focus in on one of Apple's other recent innovations that's also taking the world by storm - the Macbook Air. Apparently, like the iPhone, the hype over the Macbook Air is a lot more than just a bunch of...well, hot air.

In our modern age's never-ending obsession over miniaturization, it comes as no surprise that when the prevailing masters of innovation - Steve Jobs and Co. - deigned to invent a better laptop they took this to mean a lighter weight laptop. Being that the whole point of a laptop is to be able to carry it around with you wherever you go, this makes total sense.

At only 0.16" to 0.76" thick and weighing in at under 3 pounds, the product of Apple's efforts, the Macbook Air, hit stores on January 29 and recent reports reveal that they've been selling out of stock every single day since then. This includes venues in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. At the latest count, stores both online and off are estimating an approximate one-week delay between the time a customer orders and purchases a Macbook Air and the time it arrives for pickup (or delivery). The last time such a claim could be made, it was for the hot-selling (and still sold out now, a year-and-a-half later, the Nintendo Wii).

Critics question whether these figures are misleading, caused more by an inadequate supply than a voracious demand, but the numbers are raising eyebrows globally nonetheless. It seems even Apple itself didn't expect such a passionate reception, and is scrambling to keep up with all the orders.

In response to the sweeping popularity of their new product, Apple has even gone so far as to post a Macbook Air tracking page on their website for prospective buyers to find out whether and where a Macbook Air can be found for immediate purchase in their (or a nearby) area.

Costing between $1,800 and $3,000 (depending primarily upon processor speed: 1.6 or 1.8 GHz) many thought the price point too high to merit these kinds of figures, but figures don't lie. It seems laptop-users are willing to pay a premium to ease the burden on their shoulders, back, etc.

Is it just the bearable lightness of Macbook Air's being that makes it so desirable to consumers or is there more to it than that? Part of the appeal has to be the incorporation of multi-touch technology, adopted and adapted from the iPhone. Another novel feature is Remote Disc, allowing users to access DVDs and CD-ROMs from their other Macs or Windows PCs through their Macbook Air.

Whatever the cause, one thing seems certain: the abbreviation MBA no longer means what it used to. These days, and for the foreseeable future, it stands not for Masters of Business Administration, but for Apple's own Macbook Air.

Some Reasons Why You Should Buy A Laptop From The Internet

If your personal computer is totally broken, will you consider buy a new PC? Most people won't do that because they believe laptop offers better features than PC. Even if you are a homeboy, laptop is still better. When you want to watch a movie and play games together at the same time, you can bring your laptop with you to the sofa in front of your television. This mean laptop is still a better choice even if you love to spend your free time at home.

Now there are plenty of choices when you decide to buy a new laptop. You can simply walk to a store and choose a laptop there but usually you do not have enough options. For me, buying a laptop online is definitely a better choice. You can compare price and specification from all popular brands. The competition on the online market even made everything better for us, especially from the price point of view.

Usually the prices on the online market are cheaper than in real world because the situation is different. Laptop retailers in real world buy laptops from the manufacturers before they sell the products to us. On internet, laptop retailers usually do not buy anything. Once someone makes an offer, they will contact the laptop manufacturer then they will get their commission. My point is, you can expect for cheaper price on the internet than in the real world. You can even compare the prices from one website to another website if you want to.

The best thing we'll get from the internet is the review. Not all of us know what kind of laptop is good for our business or for our gaming needs. However, almost all popular laptop websites provide review for each laptop. With this, we will know how many features that each laptop provides, how good the graphics card is, and how reliable these laptops are. Because of these reasons, I prefer buy a new laptop online than from the real world.

On the Road Again With Bluetooth iPod Accessories For Cars

Perhaps it was inevitable that two leaders in innovative technology came together with Bluetooth iPod accessories for cars. Although the Bluetooth vehicle accessories can adapt to other brands of portable MP3 players, they are usually referred to as Bluetooth iPod accessories for cars. The Apple iPod has become an iconic brand name like Kleenex or Xerox, in that any brand of MP3 player is usually called an iPod.

Attaching To Your Vehicle

Bluetooth is the name of a brand of wireless technology that helps high tech gadgets communicate with each other. You've probably seen or heard of Bluetooth accessories for cell phones, laptops and printers. Bluetooth - originally developed by Eriksson - is now considered the industry standard for short range wireless technology. It is predicted to be even more commonplace in the years to come.

You don't need a lot of wires, then, for using Bluetooth iPod accessories for cars. You tend to just plug one small wire in, turn it on and that's it. If you've ever listened to commercial radio recently, it certainly is more commercials than tunes. Bluetooth iPod accessories for cars aren't earthshaking concepts like a cancer cure, but they can help you be less stressed when you drive, which is still a pretty radical concept.

You often get a much better sound in your car than in your home. Cars are perfectly made for maximizing the acoustics that go into rich, detailed, crisp sound. In the 1990's, British singer songwriter confessed that he didn't have a home stereo - but he listened to music in his car. As it's too dangerous to drive with headphones on, you need an ears-free and hands-free solution.

Scosche IPBCK Bluetooth Connection Kit

This is the most praised of the Bluetooth iPod accessories for your car. It won the 2006 CES Innovations award. It also won "Best New Accessory" in 2005 at the prestigious SEMA electronic show. For all that hype, it's a small gizmo. You plug it into your car dashboard stereo adapter and then connect with your iPod and you're ready for the road.

This has extras like a built-in rechargeable battery, a car power adapter, a receiver module, mounting or docking options just for the iPod brand of portable MP3 players and an extra cable. If you don't need the music but need to use your cell phone, just switch them and you have hands-free cell phone use.

Finding the Right Bluetooth iPod Accessories For Your Home

When it comes to iPod accessories, no collection is complete without at least some of it being Bluetooth compatible. But because there are so many different Bluetooth accessories for the iPod and your home available on the market, it can be pretty tricky when it comes to finding the right products for you.

So, which Bluetooth iPod accessories should you choose to take home? The answer comes with doing a little homework on your part, so read on to get started!

Determining Your Needs

The first step in creating a home iPod and Bluetooth accessories collection is determining what you need and what is important for you to have in your collection. Among the things to think about purchasing are:

Bluetooth connection kits for iPods-

These products usually provide a wireless connection between things like your iPod and your stereo, making it possible to listen to your music collection stored on your iPod, through the power of your home stereo.

Bluetooth receivers and transmitters for iPods-

Similar to a Bluetooth connection kit, this type of product allows for wireless listening pleasure through your home stereo. However, the system is made to use only your iPod power needing no extra power or cords. It simply turns your iPod into a master remote for your home stereo.

Bluetooth stereo adapters for iPods-

This product allows you to wirelessly listen to your iPod music through your home stereo using headphones. This can be great for cleaning the house or being active around the house while listening to music without disrupting others.

Of course these are only a few options out there when it comes to Bluetooth and iPod accessories for your home. But it gives you a good idea of what to expect. In short, there are many different options available but many of them are similar as to what they can do for you.

You will want to make sure of what it is you are looking to get out of your Bluetooth iPod accessories for your home, and then be prepared to compare a few models.

Comparing Before Buying

Before you make a purchase, you need to make sure you know what it is you are buying. You can do this by comparing different models of the product you want. There are a couple of ways to go about comparison shopping, it all depends on your preference.

You can compare products on the Internet, where you can get all the necessary information about a product to know what to expect from it. However, you can only get that personal comparison by visiting a traditional brick and mortar store. If personally touching and seeing a product is important to you, purchasing Bluetooth iPod accessories for your home is not the time to skip this step because of the investment it means.

The last thing to do before finally making your purchase is to make sure you are fully informed of any return and warranty policies that come with the products you purchase.

Portable Pleasure - The iPod and Earbud Carrying Case

The iPod has revolutionized the music industry, from how music is sold, packaged and enjoyed. Never before has so much music been offered in such a small package, and never has one device dictated the progress of an entire artistic movement. However, the iPod truly is a small package, and an expensive package at that; like any hard drive or computer, the hundreds of dollars spent on it can easily be wasted if the device is not cared for properly. While Apple has improved the durability of the iPod, it still cannot withstand constant abuse; crushing it, dropping it or exposing it to water or extreme heat is a sure death sentence. Thankfully, the market for iPod cases is flourishing, and listeners can easily invest in the protection of their iPods as well.

However, what many individuals forget is that the iPod is useless without its headphones. Many users purchase higher-quality earbuds in order to truly take advantage of the iPod's capabilities: earbuds that reproduce the entire spectrum of music, from the lowest bass to the highest treble. These headphones should be protected as well with the purchase of an iPod and earbud carrying case, because an iPod is nothing without sound.

The Many Shapes and Sizes

While the iPod itself can be protected with sleeves, metal cases, knit socks and various other rubber products, this usually leaves the headphones exposed to the elements. Other carrying cases, while not designed to protect the iPod while in use, do not always have enough extra room for earbuds, cables and other accessories. However, an iPod and earbud carrying case will protect both investments. Often times, the iPod and earbud carrying case will include a separate compartment for the earbuds, so the two pieces do not get jostled together. Other times, the carrying case is physically split into two separate cases: one to hold the iPod, the other to hold the earbuds. The earbud case can even attach to a keychain for easy access, and constant availability: unless the user forgets his or her keys, the earbuds will always be in reach.

Earbuds are popular due to their compact size. Traditional headphones are rigid; they cannot fold up, and they take up space equal to the size of the user's head. Earbuds are a lot simpler; they are simply two speakers attached to the cables that fit snuggly into the ear. Often times they come complete with multiple inserts to fit the wide range of ear sizes. But the cables can easily tangle, and the inserts can be lost in the hustle and bustle of life. An iPod and earbud carrying case, however, will keep the earbuds safe, orderly and in one piece. The earbuds can also be wound on a kind of reel, a kind of iPod and earbud carrying case truly designed to prevent tangles in the cables and connections.

An iPod and earbud carrying case is available to purchase from numerous manufactures, including Apple and many companies specializing in the production of speakers and headphones. This case is also available in many colors and materials, from nylon to leather and from black to purple. It all depends on the needs of the user, and the type of protection he or she seeks: waterproof or padded, keychain or reel. In the end, however, an iPod and earbud carrying case is almost as important an investment as the iPod itself.

If the units meet these strict standards they are cleaned check for any scratches which are then repaired and are now ready to be put back out on the market.

Most companies offer a minimum warranty of three to six month. It will vary by the policies of the manufacturer. You normally can purchase extended warranties for up to two years which are available by many of the top manufacturers or the resellers themselves.

Refurbished laptops should be selected to match the intended need or use of the laptop. The reputation of the manufacturer can be a factor in this decision. You may want to consider the cost and check on the warranty, these are all thing that should be looked at and evaluated before selecting a laptop.

Some of the leading companies that refurbish laptops are IBM, Dell, Compaq Armada, Toshiba, Panasonic, Acer, and Fujitsu are some of the leading companies. There are some resellers which specialize in the refurbishing of laptops such as Used Laptops.Com, USA notebook.com that are focused in too the refurbished laptop market.

Make sure you understand the difference between refurbished laptops and used laptops so you know what you are purchasing. Refurbished laptops are checked, analyzed, repaired, and updated laptops where a used laptop is normally sold as is after it has been used with know quality check or evaluation. Refurbished laptops are usually totally rebuilt by the manufacturer or a manufacturer approved dealer. They upgraded to the current market standards and then thoroughly tested making sure they are operating properly. Used laptops are just that used they may be cleaned and polished by the reseller but not much else is done to them. They do not come with the upgrades and assurances of the refurbished laptop.

With increasing competition among suppliers of the refurbished laptops today you can rest assured that pricing will remain an issue and your savings over buying a new laptop versus the purchase of a refurbished unit will be substantial.

Optimize your Apple Macbook battery settings in Energy Saver preferences to increase battery life.

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. From the View menu, choose Energy Saver. Click Show Details. Choose Battery or Battery Power from the "Settings for" pop-up menu. Choose Longest or Better Battery Life from the Optimize Energy Settings pop-up menu. These settings will put the hard disk to sleep whenever possible and reduce the computer's microprocessor performance in order to maximize its battery life.

If you are using intensive mac applications, you may wish to modify or change the settings so the microprocessor performance is no longer reduced.

Set your screen brightness to the lowest comfortable level

Press the F1 (dimmer) and F2 (brighter) keys to dim the screen until the brightness is as low as possible and the screen is still comfortable to look at.

Turn off unused features and technologies.

Just as you would turn off the lights in an unoccupied room, turning off unused features and technologies can help maximize your battery life, too. Here are a few suggestions:

Eject CDs and DVDs you're no longer using. Every so often, the optical drive spins up to read CDs or DVDs. This consumes a small amount of power. Disconnect peripherals when you're not using them. Why Rugged Laptops Are Great For Those That Work Outdoors

If your job requires you to be outdoors on a regular basis you may want to consider getting a rugged laptop computer. Information is vital to almost every task in this day and age and being without your computer can cause delays and losses in both time and money. Having to send your laptop in for repairs costs more than just the cost of having the computer fixed when you factor in the lost time, productivity and ability to do your work on it. A rugged laptop is built for your lifestyle and meant to handle even the toughest outdoor situations.

Rugged laptops are specially designed to withstand the elements. They have sealed keyboards and casings that do not allow any moisture to enter the computer so they are protected from various weather hazards including rain, snow, sleet and hail. It is important to keep in mind that even excess humidity can cause damage to a plastic laptop, but a rugged laptop will keep the excess moisture from getting inside and destroying your components or screen. When your job requires you to work "no matter what" you absolutely need a ruggedized laptop that can stand up to any kind of conditions.

A rugged laptop is also made from tougher materials to withstand shocks such as being dropped or bumping around from driving in a truck. For military personnel, law enforcement, construction workers and anyone who spends a good deal of time working outdoors, a ruggedized laptop is an absolute must. These rugged notebooks are also designed with extra protection against vibrations so the vital components of your computer including the hard drive, display will remain in good functioning condition even after regular driving in difficult terrain or in a construction vehicle.

You can use your ruggedized laptop for any applications you would use a standard laptop for, although you may not have quite as much speed. Something has to give in order to make the laptop weather resistant and durable; there is less air flow and heat displacement so the components are usually a little slower. For people in these types of demanding professions, this is a welcome sacrifice to have a computer that lasts despite the constant abuse they put it through. A fast computer that breaks the first time it falls to the ground or gets rained on won't be fast at all.

Obviously, a rugged laptop is the only logical choice for anyone who works outside. These computers cost a little more, but the durability and reliability they offer more than compensates for the difference in price. You could easily go through two plastic laptops during the lifetime of one ruggedized laptop. They are several manufacturers of rugged laptops and each offer the features mentioned above such as weatherproofing and vibration protection along with their own unique benefits and style.

When choosing which rugged notebook is right for you, you will want to consider where you will be using it, what applications you need to run, the price and the overall look of the computer. There are several styles to choose from so finding the right one for you should be a breeze.

HTC Shift - The Ultimate Mobile Broadband Device!

In a world where broadband internet access is everyone's goal, one device rules them all: the awesome HTC Shift.

Due to be released on Orange very soon, the HTC Shift is all set to shake up the world of mobile broadband, because it is, simply, the ultimate all-in-one solution. Combining all the good stuff of a UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC, to the uninitiated) with a built-in HSDPA modem, it's the perfect tool for getting the internet on the move.

Features of the HTC Shift

Known round the world as an Ultra-Mobile PC, or a sub-laptop, the HTC Shift is an absolute powerhouse of a device. The trap many are going to fall into, though, thinking it's a mobile phone. Because it's not, it won't do phone calls (and dear lord, if it was, that'd be one BIG mobile phone!) What we have here is essentially a laptop in a squashed-down body. You know it's a fully featured PC, because it comes complete with Windows Vista Business, the latest in the long line of Windows operating systems, designed to give you all the grunt and power of a what you might call a 'proper' laptop. But combined with that, it also includes a stripped down version of Windows Mobile. Why, you may ask? Well, once you've finished using one of the many programs in Vista, you just switch it to mobile mode, and you get a lot of functionality, and you get your messages, without Vista being left on, draining the battery. That's just an awesomely clever thing for HTC to have built into the Shift.

And then, of course, you have a long, long list of other features. You have full Office functionality, you have full internet functionality and of course, full email functonality. So, whether you're using the HTC Shift for work, rest or play, it will instantly shift (geddit?) into whatever gear you need! Add in to that a massive 7 inch screen, and security in the form of biometrics (fingerprint scanner, the ultimate in security, to you and me), and it makes the HTC Shift one hell of a powerful device.

Mobile broadband - the future!

But the HTC Shift mobile PC's real party trick is mobile broadband. At speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. Built in. Just imagine that for a second. You're out on the train, trying to organise tickets to go see a film after work. The cinema's automated booking service is a nightmare. But you're not worried, because you have an HTC Shift, so you change it from Windows Mobile to Vista mode (a process that takes all of, ooh one button-press!), and book the tickets online. And then jump on Messenger and tell your friend the tickets are booked without having to pay for a phone call. And all the time you do it, you'll be getting that lovely warm feeling inside, knowing that with mobile broadband, you're getting internet speeds twice as fast as the average your friends get, sat at home!

The Leisure Laptop - How Laptops Have Adjusted To Consumer Needs

Although laptops were originally designed for the busy traveling businessman always on the go, we lesser goal oriented mortals (college kids) can also have fun with these shiny, new babies. These are other things you can do with the technology aside from making money and keep you from getting bored:

* Surf the net on your laptop

A laptop's portability enables you to surf the net anywhere you are. On the beach, in your dorm, at your Aunt Hattie's, etc. Check out the latest and hottest buzz on entertainment news. Google your friend's latest boyfriend. Look for amusing anecdotes and pictures to send home. Check out the latest trends in fashion. Look for your high school crush and start getting re-acquainted. Find new friends and greet old ones on Friendster. Go on a virtual date with someone. Find out the origin of the word "hoopla" or if there is such a word. Chat with someone in a different timezone and in another language.

* Watch TV shows on your laptop

With the right equipment, you can watch your favorite shows on television instead of actually buying a television set. There are many portable high-definition tuners, receivers, and antennas available for laptops such as NetComm Banksia Digital HD USB TV Tuner, Elgato EyeTV DTT Stick and the ComPro VideoMate U3 DVB-T Stick.

* Watch home videos and listen to music on your laptop

Use your CD-ROM player and play whatever music or home video cd you have. You can also movies or listen to music online. You can even download music from your cell phone into your computer. If you have Windows Media Player installed you can get the latest and hottest music online. Another software, Kazaa, will allow you to share your music and videos with other Kazaa users.

* Play games on your laptop

For most of us, playing games on the computer is really what computers were made for. The variety of games available is unbelievable from racing games, to role-playing games, to I-don't-know-what-else. There are even dress-up games for kids (and kids at heart) and brain teaser games such as Sudoku. There are whole companies being built on the computer-based gaming industry alone. Online lotto is another popular game you can play on the web. There are also software based games like the ones bundled with Windows applications such as Pinball, Minesweeper, Hearts, and many more. Be aware though that most virus from the net are in downloaded games and can cause unknown applications to wreak havoc on your computer and cause it to crash

* Edit pictures and home videos on your laptop

Now this is something that's both fun and can actually add to your marketable skills. With the many photo and video editing software out there from such big companies such as Adobe, you can actually fix your own photos or make your own movies. Microsoft's PowerPoint is probably the easiest tool you can use to create slideshows and AVPs.

There are probably more things you can do with your laptop. The most important thing is to explore the possibilities this technology has to offer.

Dell Latitude C610 Laptop - A Mother's Review On A Cheap, Yet High Performing Laptop Computer

I need to disclose upfront that I'm not highly technologically advanced. I know what basic features that I need in a product and I am pretty good about researching and finding them for the best price. My son insisted that he needed a sleek, lightweight, fast running dependable laptop on which he could surf the web, download music and games, do his homework, email, IM and take notes.

I insisted that although I was willing to oblige him this request, I could not justify spending more than a couple hundred dollars (or less hopefully) on a laptop that he might lose or break in no time at all. After spending hours researching cheap dependable laptop and notebook computers on the web, what I came up with was the Dell Latitude C610 model. We both could agree on this model because it suited both of our needs.

The Latitude C610 is sleek and very lightweight (under six pounds) and the battery last a whopping full four and one half (4 1/2) hours on one charge. (Even my new, expensive laptop can't compare there). The Latitude has an Intel Pentium III 750 MHz processor with 256 MB memory. This makes it a pretty quick machine. The keyboard is roomy but very quiet. The unit includes both a pointing stick and a touchpad, which is pretty rare in this class of computer. This little laptop surfs the web very quickly and doesn't get bogged down or slow even though he downloads tons of music and games on it. It has a CD drive for his games also.

The best part about the laptop to me was that it us well under $200. I got a model with a few extras for about $185. It's a really nice laptop which I often use on business trips because it is so portable. My son thinks it's the bomb and doesn't like the lend it out.

If you're looking for a loaded, functional but cheap laptop for a kid, college student, or business trips on which you can work, download music and video, surf the web, IM, email and play games, give the Dell Latitude C610 a look. You may agree with us and be glad you did.

Laptops Auctions Past Present and Future

So the world of computing is growing. Laptops aren't just for business men hoping on that next flight. Even the graduate guy that looked like he was carrying a man purse down the road. Not for just that stuffy suit and tie type of guy. No longer is it for that pretty secretary to take her boss' notations.

We have gone through the old era of laptops and lept way way forward leaps and bounds to the techie department. Personal computers in every household. Dorm rooms on the college campus no longer go with out notice either as you walk down the hallways. Every room with at least one laptop screen showing or playing there own unique sounds of an individual. In our work environments by the thousands. Everything going by way of the hyper text highway. Even writing this small article for your enjoyment is done on the five year old home PC.

So what happen to all the old laptops that are out of date. Some end up in auctions. Some handed down to children. Even some are given to the less fortunate people that can't afford them from are community leaders. I enjoy seeing the big businesses giving them away to charity.

What was the greatest and hottest yesterday is obsolete today. The money makers and consumer always half to have the newest technologies to be competitive in the on-line industry. Well as a consumer I have to say if it isn't broke don't fix it. Referring to all the big companies spending on new products all the time. Less money to share with the employee's. Guess there is pros's and con's to every story though. Hey I wouldn't be making money if there wasn't a supply and demand for laptops.

So what is the computing technology (i.e. laptop) going to bring us for are future? Heads up displays with a glove to move things that we see in the air! Or are we all just starting to level out in the building boom of computers and things are just going to be more compact, lightweight, And more memory with quicker access?

Laptop Care

Now days the use of Laptops has become to a very much large extent that in spite of having to work on it we must also take uttermost care of how to keep it working efficiently for long. Here are some of the listed tips which you must follow so as to make your Laptop work efficiently.

1. First of all go for having a deep study of your laptops user annual which you have received with your Laptop. These manuals provided by the manufacturers contain many of the specifications about it which must be followed. Knowing your Laptop better is the first step of having care to it.

2. The next step is to make the laptops breathe the fresh air. This is one of the most vital parts of Laptop care. As there are many components which are minute and have to work by consuming higher wattages a proper flow of air so as to make it cooler is the must.

3. Next one is to keep your laptop always away from oil or greases because these can short circuit he internal circuits of your laptop.

4. Another very useful tips is to always keep your laptop on a hard base while working on it for long time. As this will make it to have the flow of air easily and also to radiate extra heat to the atmosphere easily.

5. Do not ever try to expose your Laptop to strong electric or magnetic field because this may disrupt its internal working. Always try to keep it free from such stray electric or magnetic fields.

6. Always try to keep them away from Subwoofer or woofer as these are a good source of stray magnetic or electric field. Always avoid keeping them near to them.

7. Do always carry your laptop in the case provided by it. As this will help to protect it from any jerk accidentally which may cause? These bags are designed so as to absorb at least some amount of jerks so as to protect your laptop from damage.

Laptops Battery Life

The battery life and the laptop battery care is another most important topic which one must have to care so as to have longer battery life. Normally the batteries which the manufacturers provide with the Laptops are Li-Ion or Li-Polymer these are rechargeable batteries and can give you optimum backup even you are working on battery packs. But the main thing is tat how to optimize it to make it work more efficiently.

The common term when we talk about Battery in Laptops is the Depth of Discharge (DOD). Depth of Discharge (DOD) is the amount that a battery is run down to before it is put back on charge. For a notebook this can vary enormously. Many machines are only run down to 70% battery during short stints of battery power (known as a shallow DOD), others are discharged completely to 10% or 5% (known as deep DOD), this is when the notebook switches off or warns about low battery.

Now another technical aspect is the charge cycle. A charge cycle is a cycle of running the battery down and then charging it up again. One charge cycle is classified as when the battery is run down to 70% or less and then charged again to 90% or more. A battery does not have to be discharged until it is flat before a charge cycle is used.

The other main factor that affects battery life is temperature, the hotter the battery the less charge cycles it will run for, the industry suggestions are that a battery is run at between 10 and 30 degrees centigrade. It should be noted that it may be hotter inside the notebook where the battery is than in the room where it is being used.

The battery life and rechargeable ability of a particular type of batteries like Li-Ion varies but these are more than enough for you before going for its replacement. Always try to have a look at your battery packs how much backup they provide and time of full charge. This is done so as to check if the batteries are becoming old or demanding for the replacement or what. If possible always try to use Power Supply while working on Laptops.

Always carry with you an extra battery pack so as to use it when you are traveling and where it is not possible to lug in to the Power Supply. If you have found that the batteries has gone old then immediately replace it with new one and never keep the old batteries in the Laptop thinking of buying the new one. This will damage your internal circuit.

Keeping Powered Up

It may seem an obvious thing to say but when it comes to a notebook computer the battery is the thing that really makes it work. Many people know this, but they forget that the battery only has a certain life span, and at some point you'll probably need to replace it if you want your notebook to keep working at the performance level that you require. This article will look at some of the considerations you need to bear in mind when you're looking to find a cheap deal for your laptop battery needs.

The first thing that you should remember is that you need to exercise care when you're looking for a battery at the cheap end of the market. One of the first things you need to bear in mind is that the shape and the overall design of the battery needs to fit in with the notebook you have. For instance, a cheap battery pack that you bought for a Toshiba notebook may not fit in with the overall design, and so when you go to buy a battery for this make, or any other make for that matter, it is a good idea to take the laptop along with you to the store and make sure that it definitely fits in the housing provided.

The second thing that you need to make sure is that the size of the battery is not such that it will short circuit the laptop itself. You can do a lot of damage to the internal mechanism of a notebook by choosing the wrong battery size and this is something that should be avoided at all costs.

Another thing that is a major consideration when you buy a laptop battery is that the voltage is absolutely correct for your particular model. There are many different types of computer accessory on the market nowadays, and some of them may be made in places where manufacturing standards are not as high as those in others. Make sure that the voltage is just right, because the wrong type of voltage can really do some damage and you could end up completely ruining your laptop all for the sake of buying the cheap battery.

When you go to buy a battery for your laptop make sure that it is one which is being manufactured by a company that is recommended by the actual makeup of the laptop itself. In this way you will avoid any kind of complications which could end up to be an expensive mistake.

PDAs - How To Choose The Right One, Not The Wrong One

Buying a PDA is not the cut and dried event everyone seems to think it is you know.

You can't just wander into your local gizmo shop off the street, blithely announce you want the latest Fandango Whatchamacallit, stuff it into your basket and march up to the checkout!

Well - you can actually but you really shouldn't.

Why not?

Because the range, scope and ability of the humble PDA has grown ten fold since it was first introduced in 1992 by - who else but Apple.

From the early days of having one operating system that linked to sod all else - the breadth of operating systems alone can ruin your new choice within seconds of getting it home.

If it won't synch to your pc at home or work - you're throwing money down the tubes, fast.

So step 1.

Before you venture out of the house to your favorite electrical outlet or jump on-line and head to www gadgetsrus dot com, pause, breath in and out slowly and curb your urges man!

What do you want your PDA to do for you? Will it be a simple toy, barely used but produced whenever you want to impress over a snifter or two?

Maybe it is for real use by you for your private business and personal "stuff".

Or maybe you want it to be an integral part of your work.

Each three options have a bearing on what you need to buy and should be looking for.

If it is purely a posing piece - don't worry about features and functionality too much, just go for shiny. Should help you climb to the top of the herd for that week,

If you want to use it for your personal "stuff" then you need a more Home based package. If it is a stand alone then try and find a PDA that emulates the applications you have already and give yourself something familiar to work with.

For work - most important is to ensure you choose a PDA that allows you to seamlessly link to your current PCs operating system (i.e. is the same) and share info and contacts between the two.

But hold one second.

You now have an option you know - ditch a PDA all together.

Yup, forget a PDA and go for a Smart Phone instead.

Smart Phones have most all the functionality of a PDA plus phone built in as well. They allow you a degree of flexibility and freedom you'll be hard pressed to get just from a PDA.

And best of all?

Pink Apple Laptops - The Newest Way to Jazz Up Your Computer

If you do an online search for pink Apple laptops, you'll find yourself looking at thousands of page results. Why are they so very popular? Maybe it is because Mac laptops have always been durable, reliable and affordable... and now they're pink too! What could be more fun than a pink laptop?

Traditionally, laptops, just like the larger desktop computers, have been dull and unexciting. Black, grey and beige. Yawn. If you're only concerned with functionality and performance, fine. But what if you also want something unique and stylish? Something that screams "I'm an individual!"

If you think about it, it is just the natural course of events that pink Apple laptops would be a popular item. Take a look at cell phones. Way back when they were new, they were nothing special to see. Large, unattractive and bulky, they were more like a walkie talkie. As time passed, however, cell phones became sleeker and more sexy. Now they also come in bright colors, and some you can change the skins on to change their look with your mood. So why not do the same thing with laptops?

Laptops are no longer just a novelty item. Almost everyone has a laptop now, just like cell phones. They are a part of everyday life. Once only affordable for the wealthy or extravagant person... these days even college and high school students have laptops. They're at the office, the coffee shop, the bus, the airplane. As they become more common, people will want to start making them more individualized to express their personalities.

That's exactly what pink Apple laptops offer - individuality. Okay, maybe most of Susie's classmates have laptops, but are they pink? I would guess not. And maybe David can get the attention he wishes for if he had hot pink electronics that everyone admired. Laptops are no longer just for computing... they are a fashion statement that helps make you stand out in a crowd.

When you consider all this, it is easy to see why pink Apple laptops are so popular and trendy. They're edgy, cute, and yes, even a little eccentric. Boring electronics - begone! Let today's laptops be all about style, color and personality! It won't be surprising to see many more people sporting bright pink laptops. But then... what will be the next laptop trend? Tiger stripes?
